Student Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

We, the "Milwaukee School of Engineering Student Chapter of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers", recognize the need to enhance the education, understanding, and communication between MSOE engineering students, related industry, faculty, and the local community. It is the objective of the ASME chapter to provide opportunities for MSOE students to begin networking with others, and the engineering industry.
Article I - Name
This organization will be known as "The Milwaukee School of Engineering Student Chapter of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers", hereafter-called ASME.
Article II - Purpose
The purpose of ASME is to provide an initial means of contact with the professional industrial world by means of touring industry, inviting guest speakers, and participating in related industry events. ASME members will begin the process of professional networking by interacting with fellow students and other student ASME chapters. The ASME will also promote development of an ethical, community conscientious student and future engineer.
Article III – Organizational Structure & Election of Officers
Section 1:
ASME members will be any MSOE student, staff, or faculty who choose to participate in ASME events and attend meetings. ASME will not discriminate against any potential members.
Section 2:
A student member, as recognized by the international organization, will be a student regularly enrolled in an approved curriculum leading to a degree at a regionally accredited school, and paying yearly dues to the international organization. (Freshmen level students can be recognized as student members for one year without paying dues to the national organization.)
Section 3:
Student member dues of $10 per year will be collected at the beginning of fall term to help offset the cost of operating the club and all of its events.
Section 4:
A president is responsible for the organization and the successful operation of the student section. His/her duties include oversee delegation of duties among officers and committees, organizing fundraisers and donation drives. This position is the head of alumni and faculty relations. The president should also stay in touch with Student Life in organizing campus wide activities/events and community service projects. She/he has the responsibility to aid another officer in any situations that may arise, mainly the assisting the Vice President in finding speakers.
Section 5:
The vice president will assist the president with his/her duties, and oversees business meetings in the absence of the president. Responsibilities include finding and organizing speakers for presentations, creating exciting design competitions for the general meeting. In addition to the creation of those design competitions the VP is also required to keep a folder containing the general rules, the supplies, and overview of each one of the competitions. An updated list of design competitions must be given to the web master for posting on our site.
Section 6:
A secretary will be responsible for taking any necessary meeting notes and submitting those to the Webmaster for posting, posting notices for upcoming meetings via e-mail and campus wide posters. Also this position is responsible for the creation of any publication needed by the organization. Furthermore they are to maintain a log of activities contacts of the organization.
Section 7:
The treasurer is responsible for handling all of the money transactions, setting up the budget for whole semester, and helping each project director to set up a budget for each project. The treasurer has to keep a clear financial record, keeping a copy of all donation and reimbursement documentation, writing checks, and making deposits. The cabinet members and faculty advisor should remain informed of the organizations financial standings. Another responsibility of the treasurer is to work with the fundraising director to obtain enough funding for all the events and projects.
Section 8:
The involvement coordinator (IC) main responsibility is to promote student involvement in the organization and the organizations involvement in the campus and community life. The IC is in charge of coordinating industry tours and conferences not only for our chapter but also among the Milwaukee Section, UWM and the Marquette. For this position a license to drive the MSOE athletic van is highly recommended.
Section 9:
The Webmaster is in charge for the design and upkeep of the ASME student chapter web page.
Section 10:
All officers must be paid members of the MSOE chapter of the ASME and must attend all meetings.
Section 12:
All officers will be elected in the spring quarter. Nominations for office will take place at the third week meeting spring quarter, and at the fifth week business-meeting nominations will be reopened and the candidates voted for in a ballot style election. The transfer of power and responsibilities will take place in business meeting with all current and incoming officer present during the sixth week of classes of the spring term.
Section 13:
In the event an officer is unable to complete his/her term, a majority of ASME members will determine the best course of action. (ie. To leave the position vacant, with duties distributed amongst the remaining officers, or to hold an election for the vacant position.)
Article 4 - Meetings
Section 1:
Business meetings will be held every other week, as determined by the serving officers and ASME members.
Section 2:
The president shall preside over all official business meetings. In the event that the president is unable to preside over a meeting, the next ranking available officer shall assume that duty.
Section 3:
A majority, more than half, of the meetings attendants shall constitute a quorum. There must be at least ten ASME members present to hold a vote on any official business.
Section 4:
The allocation of funds over $50 will be voted on at a business meeting. In an emergency, the officers will vote between meetings on funding.
Article 5 - Amendments to the Constitution & Bylaws
Section 1:
This constitution may be amended by a vote of two-thirds of ASME members present at a business meeting. A notice and a copy of any proposed amendment shall be distributed to all members at least one meeting prior to the meeting at which the amendment is to be considered. The membership shall be notified of adopted constitutional amendments.
Section 2:
Any member of the ASME may submit constitutional amendments.
Amendments
Amendment 1:
All officers shall meet in a business meeting at least three (3) times per term. These meets must be independent of general business meetings. For these meetings, meeting minutes shall be recorded and published.
Amendment 2:
Requests for financial reimbursement from ASME of approved spending must be filed on the appropriate form within a reasonable period. Two (2) signatures, including the Treasurer's, must accompany all checks from ASME accounts.
Amendment 3:
To promote a higher level of activity within the organization and between other organizations the ASME shall participate in the Ingersoll-Rand Competition sponsored by the ASME International.
Amendment 4:
The communications representative, appointed by the President, shall report status of the organization within the Ingersoll- Rand competition, also based on status within the competition make recommendations for organizational improvements.
